Buried Beacon
Sometimes the North York Moors has its own little micro-climate. This day right here was a perfect example of this. With snow forecast we’d both planted the seed with our work to potentially have the day off enjoying a snow day. Having woken up and opened the curtains it was nothing like Christmas morning with not a flake in sight so Laura opted to go into work while I thought I’d still enjoy the day off and head out with the camera. My face completely changed however once I got over the hill and onto the moors as the view turned into a winter wonderland in front of me. Having visited a copse of trees near Lockwood Beck I ventured deeper up onto the moors and decided to try Danby Beacon. Without four-wheel drive and snow tyres it was a slow and still sketchy journey on small roads all the time praying not to meet any cars coming the other way on the single track road. Thankfully I only met the one car and we managed to stop and slowly pass before both continuing on our way. Once I’d got there and parked up the relief set in and I could start becoming the kid at Christmas I always am (even making snowballs without anyone to throw them at) while ensuring I didn’t create any footprints in the untouched snow I would shortly be photographing. I’d opted to go for a composition I’d taken several times before using the heather and trig point in the foreground and the gap between them to lead you up to the metal beacon in the background.
