Little Shambles
The Shambles in York are a heavily visited cobbled street with medieval buildings including some as old as the 14th century. Shambles is originally a term used in relation to open-air slaughterhouse / meat market which may not be the most glamorous but nowadays people are drawn in their thousands to the street for both the lovely independent shops but also the beautiful historical buildings. As a photographer I rarely enter photography competitions however the first I ever entered was the Digital Camera magazine Historic buildings competition and this was the photo I submitted. I figured there would be lots of photos of castles / abbeys submitted and hoped this night shot of the shambles would stand out and I’m pleased to say it won and they loved it so much the magazine asked me to write a double page spread about both myself and this image which was amazing! Having waited for the rain to stop having taken shelter in a nearby pub we headed for the shambles hoping they wouldn’t be too busy and that we could capture an empty street in between the crowds of visitors and ghost walks and while it took some patience, I’m pleased so say I did indeed manage to capture this shot.
