Northumberland is the most northern county in England. Bordering in Scotland has seen it historically frequently used as a battleground between the two neighbouring countries. While this is no longer the case the aftermath of this still remains with castles littering the county with it featuring more castles than any other English county. While we have only visited a few of these including the beautiful Bamburgh and Lindisfarne castles there are more than 70 in the county. While the castles are well worth a visit we love exploring the Northumberland coastline and it certainly fully merits its labelling as an area of natural beauty.
There are many sites worth visiting but for us the Sycamore Gap tree at Hadrians Wall was certainly up there and thankfully we managed to visit before it was illegally heartlessly felled back in 2023. We went to visit as part of a Valentines Day trip early in 2023 and little did we know it would be our only one.
